Prayers at many Gurudwaras' went on till midnight on November 27, 2023. However, the biggest programme held in Mumbai was at Gurudwara 4 Bungalows in Andheri West. The celebrations started almost a week before the main programme. A massive procession called Nagar Kirtan was led under the leadership of Jathedar Jaspal Singh Suri Ji, with the presence of thousands of devotees on Saturday 25th, starting from Lokhandwala market and ending at Gurudwara saheb. The entire route was lit up with lights.

More than 30000 devotees visited Gurudwara Saheb for darshan on the 27th,  and Guru ka Langar was served to all of them.

Guru Nanak Jayanti TIME/DATE

On the fifteenth lunar day of the Hindu month of Kartik, or Kartik Poornima as it is known in the Gregorian calendar, people celebrated the festival. In the Hindu calendar, this takes place in the month of November. 

This year, the auspicious festival will be celebrated by Sikhs around the world with utmost love and reverence on Monday, November 27 It will be celebrated as the 554th birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

As per Drik Panchang, the auspicious timings for performing the rituals of Guru Nanak Jayanti are as follows

Guru Nanak Jayanti SIGNIFICANCE

Guru Nanak Jayanti holds immense significance for the Sikh community and this auspicious occasion is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The sacred festival is marked by spiritual observances, community services and joyous festivities.

Guru Nanak’s teachings emphasise ‘Ik Onkar’ - the oneness of God,  equality among all individuals regardless of caste or creed and the importance of selfless service. His philosophy revolves around the teachings of Guru Nanak emphasising ‘Ik Onkar’ - the oneness of God.

The celebrations at Gurudwaras kicked off two days before Guru Nanak Jayanti. During this time, a continuous 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, known as Akhand Path, is organised. 

On the day preceding Guru Nanak’s birthday, a procession called Nagar Kirtan is taken out. This procession is led by five men, known as the Panj Pyare, who carry the Sikh triangular flag, Nishan Sahib.
